Description

This is a fantastic piece of mining history, featuring a canvas mining cap with an attached carbide lamp. The carbide lamp represents the classic illumination method for miners before the widespread adoption of electric cap lamps. The lamp itself is a great example of the style, constructed from brass or bronze for the main body and water reservoir, with a fluted copper or brass base (the carbide reservoir), and an impressive polished reflector to maximize light output. The lamp is held onto the cap via a substantial steel bracket riveted to the visor. The canvas cap is a utilitarian, soft-sided design, common in the early-to-mid 20th century before rigid hard hats were universally required, and features a rear cinch strap with a metal buckle. Visible markings are limited to some handwritten numbers, possibly an inventory or size notation, “22c”, near where the lamp attaches. The entire assembly shows excellent signs of authentic use, with a rich patina on the metals, including some tarnish and minor oxidation, and the canvas is stained and soiled from years in the mine. The reflector maintains a good shine but has light scratches and minor pitting consistent with age and work use. The cap is structurally sound but heavily worn, with some fraying and discoloration.
