Description
What a wonderful, well-documented piece of wartime history! This as a World War II-era Blackout or ARP (Air Raid Precaution) Lantern manufactured by T. E. Blandon & Son. This is not a typical flame-safety mining lamp, but a specialized utility lantern, likely made of painted sheet metal (steel), specifically designed to comply with British wartime dim-out regulations after 1939. The most significant feature is the hinged front plate with the narrow vertical slit, which would have been used to severely restrict light output to a mere glimmer, allowing the carrier to navigate without being visible from the air. The “1942” date marks it precisely to the height of the British war effort. The lamp is in heavily used, authentic “as-found” condition, retaining a rugged look consistent with service in the Home Front. The black paint is extensively scratched, flaked, and worn, revealing the underlying metal. There is light surface rust in several areas, especially where paint loss is severe and at the hinged joints. The glass lens is intact but dusty, and an old, clear bulb is present inside. The overall patina is excellent, showcasing its genuine history. H 8″, W 5″, D 5″
