Description

High-end railroad luggage rack (or “train rack”) from the late 19th or very early 20th century. Deeply cast decorative grating meant for substantial weight with pronounced, upward-sweeping end brackets to secure luggage—is a perfect match for those found in upscale Pullman cars or first-class train compartments of the Aesthetic Movement and Victorian eras. The complex geometric and foliate motifs on the side rails and quatrefoil grate were common decorative elements used by manufacturers like the Dayton Manufacturing Co. or Adams & Westlake (Adlake) for their high-end railcar fittings. It presents in very good antique condition, displaying a deep, aged bronze patina that confirms its superior material and age. Minor white residue is present on one end bracket, and there is overall surface wear consistent with a century of use, all of which authenticate its vintage. This is a very desirable and highly versatile piece of architectural salvage and railroadiana. H 6.25″, W 28.5″, D 10″. See photos.
