October Fall Classic
Lot 1281:
Description
This is an impressive piece of equestrian garden art, likely a late 20th or early 21st-century lost-wax cast bronze sculpture. The artist has captured a lifelike, dynamic pose of a horse in a natural, walking stride, a classic subject for bronze work dating back to the grand European foundries. The muscular detailing is well-executed, particularly across the haunches and shoulder, giving the piece a robust and powerful presence. The mane and tail have a lovely, flowing realism. The piece exhibits a handsome verdigris patina, which suggests it’s been outdoors for some time; the bronze has naturally oxidized to a deep blue-green and brown tone, which is highly desirable for outdoor statuary. The item’s condition is consistent with being a vintage outdoor piece: the patina is unevenly worn, with areas of lighter brown showing through the darker green/gray, most notably on the horse’s back and neck. This variation in color actually enhances the depth and age of the sculpture. There are no major chips or breaks visible, but a small, sharp dent is present on the tip of the proper right ear, and general surface wear is present. H 40″, W 11″, D 53″
