Description
These monumental, nearly life-size recumbent lions are a spectacular example of classical Baroque Revival outdoor sculpture. The style is directly inspired by the famous ancient and Renaissance lions, such as those flanking the monuments on the Capitoline Hill in Rome. Cast in bronze, they were created to serve as powerful, aristocratic gate or doorway guardians for a large estate. Their commanding, yet relaxed, recumbent posture, coupled with the highly detailed, dramatic manes and musculature, speaks to the high-quality lost-wax casting method. The metal has acquired a truly exquisite and sought-after natural verdigris patina, ranging from a deep teal to lighter mint green, which is the perfect finish for bronze garden art. Both lions are included as a matched pair. The condition of the bronze itself is excellent, showing no signs of cracking or damage; the wear is solely the beautiful, weathered patina developed from years of outdoor exposure, which is precisely what enhances their value and character.
