October Fall Classic
Lot 1271b:
Description
These are a stunning pair of English or Continental European Neoclassical-style brass andirons, likely dating from the 19th or early 20th century. The quality of the casting and detail is exceptional, featuring a tall, baluster-form standard with an elaborate, repoussé or deeply cast spherical finial decorated with acanthus and possibly fleur-de-lis motifs. The column transitions into a tightly spiraled, segmented shaft above a decorative element featuring two opposing, fiercely cast lion heads, a classic decorative element. The wide, scroll-footed base provides excellent stability. The materials are polished brass with black iron log rests, which are original to the set. The brass shows a wonderful warm patina consistent with age, minor surface scratching, and expected tarnish in the recessed details. The iron log rests show evidence of use and heat exposure, which is typical for functional andirons. Estimated measurements are: H 21.5″, W 11″, D 23″.
