October Fall Classic
Lot 1217a:
Description
These two pieces are a perfect match for any vintage farm and feed advertising collection. The first piece is a classic Illinois Agricultural Association (I.A.A.) / American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) member sign from the mid-20th century. Embossed single-sided painted metal (tin) sign, correctly marked as manufactured by Scioto Sign-Kenton, O.-Chicago, Ill., a prolific maker of such dealer signs. The classic black, yellow, red, and white design signifies a farmer’s membership, with the unique lower banner personalized for member Andora J. Bradley, a rare feature that can tie the piece to a specific locale and history. The second item, the Bauer’s Farm Service Purina Chows Marshfield – Wis. advertising thermometer, is a vertical tin thermometer that perfectly complements the farm theme. Its coloring echoes the famed Purina checkerboard pattern, advertising the popular “Purina Chows” line of animal feeds from the historic Ralston Purina company. The painted metal sign shows expected wear for a sign of its age and material, with substantial surface scratching, scuffs, and paint loss/patina across the field, particularly on the black areas, giving it an authentic vintage look. There are mounting holes present. The reverse side shows vertical scrape marks and minor oxidation. The thermometer is in good overall condition; the painted tin has age-related discoloration, minor paint loss/chipping on the edges, and some surface scuffs. The original thermometer tube is present, intact, and appears functional. H 13.25″, W “13.75″, D 0.25″ (Thermometer) and H. 9.75”, W. 13.75” (sign). See photos.
