October Fall Classic
Lot 1143:
Description
This is a fantastic piece of Art Deco era Americana, a complete traveler’s shaving stand likely dating to the 1920s or 1930s. The set is manufactured by Apollo, a subsidiary of the Bernard Rice’s Sons company in New York City, and is a beautiful example of quality utility ware from the period. The materials include a nickel-plated brass or similar white metal stand and base, a single-sided regular beveled mirror, a white milk glass shaving bowl, and a classic Ever-Ready brand shaving brush with a two-tone plastic (likely Bakelite or early plastic) handle and natural hair bristles. The stand features an adjustable swivel mirror and a clever bracket to hold the brush inverted for drying—an essential feature for proper brush maintenance. The condition is consistent with age and use; the metal plating shows significant loss, scratching, and oxidation throughout, especially on the upright post and mirror frame, giving it a rich, unrestored patina. The milk glass bowl appears clean with no chips or cracks. The Ever-Ready brush has legible markings, and the bristles show typical wear and staining. H 14″, W 6″, D 5.25″.
