The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 2295:
Description
This is a classic Japanese sword guard, or tsuba, crafted in a soft-lobed mokko-gata (quince flower) shape, likely dating from the mid-to-late Edo period. The plate is forged from a dark, patinated iron and features delicate zogan (inlay) work depicting dragonflies and autumn grasses in what appears to be brass or gold-colored alloy. The dragonfly, or akitsu, was a popular motif among samurai, symbolizing victory and focused intent because the insect only moves forward. The reverse side shows subtle relief carvings of stylized waves. The piece exhibits a heavy, dark oxidation and surface pitting consistent with age, along with some minor loss and wear to the fine metal inlays. H 3″, W 2.75″, D 0.2″. See photos.
