Lot 2113:
Description
19th Century Fijian Sali war club is a beautiful example of Polynesian art. A traditional club named after the clawed “Sal” flower of wild banana-like plants found in Fiji, due to its similar shape. The weapon’s high crest, sets it apart from other similar Fijian clubs. The Sali is a long and heavy war club carved from the stem of a local, extremely hard tree with a short side branch that makes the fork like head of the club. The wide head of this example is carved in a checkered pattern. The sharp edge of the club was designed to crack bone from strikes. Dimensions: 44” long and a head approximately 12” wide. Thickness of head 2.25” and diameter of handle: 2.05”. Flared knob at base to keep a good grip in wet battle conditions. Chips and cracks in the wood commensurate with age and use. Please see photos.
