The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1327:
Description
A fantastic grouping of historical memorabilia connected to one of the most pivotal figures of the Battle of Midway, Ensign George Gay, the only survivor of Torpedo Squadron 8 (VT-8) from the USS Hornet. This collection centers around two striking black and white art prints depicting the Douglas SBD Dauntless dive bomber, the aircraft that sank four Japanese carriers at Midway. The prints are accompanied by a personalized, typewritten letter on “George Gay” letterhead, and its original envelope, addressed to John Bannister. Also included is a small card that appears to be a promotional item for the prints, featuring the phrase “SOLE SURVIVOR.” The materials, primarily paper stock, appear to be in excellent to very good condition, with the prints showing sharp detail and minimal creasing. The letter and envelope have expected folding and postal wear. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11″, W 17″. See photos.
