The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1326:
Description
This is an exceptional collection of World War II aviation memorabilia centering on Lieutenant General Jay T. Robbins, USAF (Ret.), a legendary P-38 Lightning ace of the 5th Air Force with 22 Japanese victories, 181 combat missions. The lot includes four large black and white art prints depicting both the P-40 Warhawk (incorrectly noted as flown in combat by Robbins, as clarified in a note) and the P-38J Lightning, each signed by Robbins, with two specifically identifying him as Major Jay T. Robbins of the 80th/8th Fighter Sq., 5th Air Force. Also included is a beautifully autographed color print, a copy of Robbins’ autobiography sketch detailing his service in the Pacific, a personalized postcard to “John,” and several handwritten notes from “J.T.R.” correcting details about his combat aircraft (stating his limited combat was in the P-39/P-400, with all victories in the P-38, not the P-40). The combination of autographed prints and original handwritten correspondence makes this a truly personal and historically significant grouping for a WWII aviation collector. The prints and paper items appear to be in excellent, clean condition with sharp corners and no visible fading or major creasing. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11″, W 17″. See photos.
