The John Bannister Collection - D-Day and Militaria
Lot 1129:
Description
This is an exceptional grouping of World War II aviator ephemera, highly desirable for any military history collector. The lot centers around a signed photograph of General Günther Rall (1918-2009), the third-most successful fighter ace in history with 275 victories, executed in black-and-white. The envelope addressed to him in 8700 Würzburg, Reichenhall, Germany features a distinct ‘LUFTPOST PAR AVION’ sticker and a German postage stamp, adding provenance to the grouping. The two included unsigned photo cards depict an Imperial Japanese Navy fighter aircraft, identified by the accompanying text as an aircraft flown by LT. Zenji Abe on 7 December 1941, and are likely reproductions from the era or a later collector set. These items are all paper and cardstock. The photograph and associated envelope are in very good overall condition, with the autograph in sharp, dark ink, showing only minor edge wear and age-toning typical of items stored for decades. The photo cards are also crisp with minimal wear. H 9", W 10.5". Part of the John Bannister Collection.
