Description

This is an exceptional example of a Hinomaru Yosegaki, or Japanese Good Luck Flag, from the World War II era. These flags, featuring the central red Hinomaru (Sun Disc) on a white field, were a traditional and deeply personal item carried by Japanese soldiers heading into battle. Friends, family, and colleagues would sign the flag with calligraphic messages of encouragement, patriotism, and prayers for the soldier’s safe return. The presence of both numerous handwritten inscriptions and a hand-drawn illustration—appearing to be a samurai or warrior figure—significantly enhances its collectible appeal, as the addition of artwork is less common. The material appears to be thin silk or cotton, typical for these war-time souvenir flags. Condition is commensurate with age and likely use, showing significant folds, creases, and overall yellowing/staining of the fabric. There are also visible tears and losses along the edges, and some of the ink appears faded, though the vast majority of the inscriptions remain legible. The top corners are reinforced with what looks like contemporary gold-colored tape for hanging or preservation. H 39.25″, W 25″. See photos.
