Description

This is a Knights of Pythias fraternal sword made by the M.C. Lilley and Co. in Columbus Ohio. They manufactured swords between 1882 up until1925 under that name. The blade is 29” long and has a spear point. The obverse side has central etched panel that reads: “Major G. O. True, M.D. Surgeon 1st Reg’t U.R.G.P. Pawtucket. R.I.” It is flanked by decorative floral designs. Marked on the Ricasso is a stamp that is hard to see directly. On the reverse of the Ricasso is “MADE BY THE M.C. LILLEY & CO COLUMBUS O.” The sword guard features a MD and U R on it. It has a wire wrapped leather handle. Some flaking of the leather, but wire is firmly attached. The scabbard is nickel plated with decorative hardware for rings and drag. Brass throat is simple in design. Upper ring has medical caduceus prominently featured. 70 percent of the nickel plating is still present on scabbard. The decorative hardware retains much of its original gilding with some surface corrosion. The sword blade is bright, with some dark spots, but no corrosion. With a little t.l.c. this could clean up well. Further research needed as to who Major G.O. True M.D. was. Please see photos.
