Description

This is an Indian Wars era US Army Model 1884/85 detachable cape. Used with or detached from the knee-length coat worn underneath, this style of cape was useful in keeping the chill off one’s shoulders, while allowing complete freedom of the arms and hands. The dark blue cape lining, used since 1876, and up until the dark lining infantry coat was phased out after 1900. This cape is in very good condition, with some moth damage on the lower left chest area, darned or backed with matching cloth and blends in well [1-1/2” diameter]. The outer Saxony blue color and dark blue interior are solid and strong, with firm seams. The seven wire eyelets for coat attachment along the neck are present and firmly affixed. The front is buttoned with seven correct small Indian War general service (chicken) eagle buttons [3x Horstman, Philadelphia and 4x other undecipherable manufacturer]. The cape displays well, and was part of the Civil War and Indian Wars display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
