Civil War Auction
Lot 1129:
Description
This sword is marked on the ricasso “AMES MFG CO/CHICOPEE/MASS”. The other side is marked: US/G.W.C./1864”. The blade is very bright with some nicks, but nothing detracting. The tip is good. The brass handle and cross guard have very nice patina. The leather washer at the base of the blade is missing. The scabbard is complete, with the brass throat exhibiting a few dents. The brass drag exhibits a couple of cuts in it. It is also stamped “G.W.C.” [for inspector George W. Chapin]. The leather flat side has some cracks and weathering, and the stitching running down the scabbard is tight, but there are two creases 1/3 and 2/3 down the scabbard. When the sword is in the scabbard, these creases are not evident. Overall, this sword is in good condition only because of the scabbard condition. Measures 39-1/2” overall w/scabbard. Blade 32-1/4” and 39” overall for sword. This sword was part of the Civil War and Indian War display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
