Description

Group of material associated with Civil War Union Colonel Ezra P. Jackson. He was the Commanding Officer of Company H, 58th Ohio Volunteers. He was assigned to duty on board the gunboats that bombarded Vicksburg during the 48 day siege of the city. 31,000 Confederates surrendered on July 4, 1863. In his personal journal entry for July 4, 1863 he wrote: “On board the ordnance Steamer Great Western of the Mississippi Squadron. Vicksburg surrendered today to the Stars and Stripes. The day was sellebrated [sic] with renewed patriotism by our brave boys. One of the most Glorious fourth of Julys I ever witnessed.” This grouping is quite extensive. The highlight is his personal journal, filled with many entries, and detailed accounts such as the one written above. A German made glass flask with leather cover and sterling silver cup with gilt interior and leather protective cover [damaged on back]. Officers sash and buckle belt. The maroon sash and tassels are in good condition with two small holes on one end of the sash, but do not detract from the piece. The tassels are complete with some discoloration or fading on parts of them. Overall, a very nice sash. The M1851 officers buckle and belt are in wonderful condition. There are two matted photos of the men and officers of Company H, 58th Ohio Infantry Volunteers. 1) Caption: “History of Company ‘H’ 58th Ohio Infantry Volunteers” with an arrow pointing to Col Jackson standing in front left [as viewed] with his sword in left hand. 11”x9-3/4”. 2) Image of Col Jackson with 7 Staff Officers of Co. H, 58th Ohio Infantry Volunteers. 9-1/2” x 8”. A print taken August 1915 of the house [one mile west of Lancaster OH] that belonged to the wife’s’ family of Ezra Peter Jackson. Modern photo print of a bronze plaque commemorating the US Army of the Tennessee Escorts and Guard units, of which then Major Ezra P. Jackson was detached for service on a gunboat. Photo taken circa 5/1984 [backstamp]. Finally the US Navy Medal [SN# 429) and ribbon bar that Ezra Jackson was awarded for his Naval Service in the Civil War. This wonderful collection, educated and was seen, by generations as part of the Civil War and Indian War display at Donley’s Wild West Town Museum for 45 years.
