Description
Framed certificate from Thomas Garland governor of the state of Illinois “To all to whom these presents shall come greetings… This certificate is a land grant made by the auditor of public accounts G.A. Walker, school commissioner and agent for the inhabitants of Mason County, Illinois. George Vaughn was granted a certain lot of land lying in the county aforesaid being part of the section numbered 34 granted by the United States to the State of Illinois for the use of the inhabitants of Township Twenty One North and the range 9 W of the third principal Meridian… Lots numbered 69 of 15 on the plate of the northwest quarter of said section containing 15 acres…” It is dated the first day of March 1845 and is signed by Lyman Trumbull the Secretary of State as well as Governor Thomas Garlin in lower right corner and countersigned by the Auditor P.A. J.A. Sheilds?
Lyman Trumbull was an American lawyer judge and politician who represented the State of Illinois from 1855 to 1873. He was an abolitionist attorney, and key political ally to Abraham Lincoln. He authored several landmark pieces that was the legal basis for the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment of the Constitution of the United States [that would abolish slavery] and the Civil Rights act of 1866 which led to the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. A wonderful legal document that has a signature of a significant and important individual in the abolition of slavery in the United States. Please see pictures.
