Description

This is a wounded in action New York 80th Infantry amputee’s prosthetic wooden peg leg. It is 41″ long and has a padded rest between the yoke and covered in red stuffed furniture material. It is attributed to 23 year old Pvt. John R. Proper from Kingston, New York. He was wounded in the Battle of Manassas on August 30th 1862. The peg leg is 41″ long and shows much age and heavy use. It is crudely made and shows a lot of character. Also included is 10.” x 12.5″ wood frame with printed photo of Proper in uniform and comes with information about he and his unit, his post war marriage and his 9 children. Frame contents show sun fading. There is more research possibilities. This is a wonderful and sad reminder of the cost of war.
