Description
The collector states from research that this might be a Civil War Kepi that has been refurbished after the war with replaced sweatband and lining. The research shows it may be the New York 77th Infantry Regiment from Upstate Albany-Saratoga region. The ribbed metal “77” and “F” devices are most likely post war. Visor is flat, has not much crazing is firmly in place. The chinstrap has “chicken neck” eagles buttons with “I” is shield. Chinstrap is solid and has crazing to exposed straps. Blue wool body stands 4.5″ tall and has some mothing under chinstraps and to top and back. The leather sweatband is hand sewn and is worn and has tears. The quilted black fabric lining shows wear and age. This cap may be a real sleeper and the New York 77th Regt connection seems plausible from known records.
