Description

This is an excellent example of the 11 button M1858 cavalry shell jacket and is marked in right armpit with inked large “X” and “3” and there are two inked over manufacturer’s oval ink stamp in both armpits. In the middle of back of plaid lining is white ink stenciled “17245A” over “40”. Most of the buttons match and appear to have original stitching and are the plain thin neck eagle general service pattern. Button 6 and 11 are matching replacements held with small straight pins. The lining has a left breast pocket and a slit opening which shows 3 letter hand inked initials. The condition is very good with the yellow worsted piping showing general fading to a more cream yellow color. The front chest and left arm area has 3 small old field repairs. The 11 button holes show normal wear. The blue wool body has some light moth tracks to parts of front and on back but the are no holes. Surprisingly, they are hard to see and do not distract. There is a popped thread on seam between left arm sleeve meets shoulder (toward back). This is a classic shell jacket with some interesting variation.
