This is an incredibility rare Frankfort Arsenal marked range finder. These instruments were in very limited production even for the Union. They were so high prized, they were given as awards for marksmanship. This brass stadia is marked “U.S. Stadia” in script lettering at top and “Frankford Arsenal” at bottom. At center is long triangular opening with sliding sight. Bottom is marked “1000” and graduates up to “100.” One side reads”Infantry 70.86 inches” and on the other “Cavalry 98.43 inches.” Maker marked on bottom “Geo. W. Simons & Bro. Manfrd. Phila.” Item is complete with 23″ twine with brass ball ends and t-bar watch fob chain. Also has the ORIGINAL chamois storage bag. The Condition is very good for all parts. bag is a bit stiff and shows wear but is still supple. Holes were punched for straw-string but it looks like it was never strung. This is a wonderfully rare item from the Civil War.
