Hand-Carved Wooden Folk Art – David Mather, one of the most enigmatic gunfighters of the American West, he was moody, silent and walked a thin line between the right and wrong side of the law, thus the nickname “Mysterious Dave”, while playing cards in Kansas, a gunfight broke out and Dave’s brother shot and killed a gambler, rather than face a biased local court, both brothers jumped bail and fled town, he disappeared into the frontier, never saw or heard from him again, his precise fate is unknown, artist carved “VIT” in bottom, initials of a talented regional woodcarver that has deep roots in waterfowl decoy carving, the texture work on the clothing and boots strongly mimics the “feather texturing” techniques used by wildlife carvers to give wooden birds a realistic look before paint is applied, figurines have been in storage for 40 years, were going to be put on display at Donley’s Wild West Town, minor scuffs, good condition, 12″ x 6 1/2″
