Lot 2079:
Description
This fascinating lot features four vintage music reference books and instructional guides that span over a century of musical history, serving as an excellent resource for any dedicated collector or historian. Included in the collection is a rare copy of A Complete System for the Violin by J.F. Hanks (published by Russell and Richardson, Boston), featuring an instructional method and an attached historic treatise. You also get a first-edition copy of James Creighton’s massive Discopaedia of the Violin 1889-1971 (University of Toronto Press, 1974), complete with its original yellow dust jacket. Rounding out the lot are two excellent band references: a 1970 Library of Congress discography of The Sousa Band compiled by James R. Smart, and a signed, limited-quantity 1972 special edition of Pioneers in Brass by Glenn Bridges, which includes an enclosed typed correspondence note and a signature dated 1973. Physically, the books show varying degrees of age-related wear; The American Violinist outer cover is heavily worn with staining, chipping, and spine deterioration, while the other volumes exhibit moderate shelf wear, edge toning, and minor scuffing to the dust jackets and covers, though their interiors remain intact and highly legible. H 3.75″, W 11.25″, D 9.25″. See photos for condition.
