Description

This exceptional gathering of vintage literature serves as a comprehensive archive for the dedicated phonograph and audio historian, tracing the evolution of early sound recording across American, British, and German scholarship. Highlighting the collection is a rare copy of Uncle Josh’s Punkin Centre Stories by legendary “Talking Machine” pioneer Cal Stewart (1905, Stanton and Van Vliet Co., Chicago) featuring a hand-signed preface. It is accompanied by a Benn Pitman and Jerome B. Howard The Manual of Phonography (1897, The Phonographic Institute Co., Cincinnati); a first edition of Jerrold Northrop Moore’s definitive biography A Voice in Time: The Gramophone of Fred Gaisberg (1976, Hamish Hamilton, London); and a true first printing of the foundational reference From Tin Foil to Stereo by Oliver Read and Walter L. Welch (December 1959, Howard W. Sams & Co., Indianapolis). The group is rounded out by two prominent German works: Herbert Jüttemann’s highly detailed Phonographen und Grammophone (1979, Klinkhardt & Biermann, Braunschweig) and Günter Große’s Von der Edisonwalze zur Stereoplatte (1981, VEB Lied der Zeit Musikverlag, Berlin), which retains an elegant decorative “Ex Libris Kopta” bookplate. Objectively, the books are in fair to good antiquarian condition, exhibiting expected external shelf wear, minor spine fading, corner bumping, and light toning or foxing to the interior pages, though the bindings remain sound. H 5″, W 9.5″, D 6.5″. See photos for condition.
