Lot 2520:
Description
This poignant pair of mid-19th-century style portraits features Samuel Lee Johnston (1844–1920) of Rock Hill, South Carolina, and his wife, Sarah Rebecca Nunnery Johnston (1861–1933). Historical records confirm Samuel Johnston enlisted at age 17 in Company E, 17th South Carolina Infantry, known as the “Indian Land Tigers.” He saw significant action, including the Battle of South Mountain and the Battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg), eventually rising to the rank of 4th Corporal. He remained with his company through the grueling Siege of Petersburg and was present at the surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865. The male subject is depicted in a classic “armed to the teeth” pose with a revolver and D-guard Bowie knife, while the female subject wears a period-correct dress. Note: While the subjects represent authentic Civil War history, the physical items are modern photomechanical reproductions on textured, canvas-like media, as evidenced by the uniform hexagonal dot matrix. They are presented as rectangular prints secured within handsome, oval-aperture Victorian-style wooden frames with gilt inner liners. Both the prints and frames are in good presentable condition and some age-appropriate wear to the backing paper. H 14″, W 12″, D 1.75″. Please see photos
