Lot 2521:
Description
This lot features a fascinating study in field-expedient military gear, headlined by a Model 1885/1896 US Cavalry Saddlebag that has been historically modified into a single-shoulder dispatch or courier bag. Originally half of a paired set joined by a leather yoke, this heavy-duty bag retains its characteristic triple-strap closure and “US” embossed flap, with a period-added shoulder strap indicating its conversion for individual field use. Accompanying it is a Model 1904 Cavalry Pommel Bag, a single-unit teardrop-shaped pouch designed for the McClellan saddle. Both pieces are crafted from thick, darkened bridle leather with brass and copper hardware, showcasing the rugged utilitarianism of the Spanish-American War through WWI eras. The leather exhibits significant age-related crazing, surface cracking, and verdigris on the rivets; the modified saddlebag shows a notable tear at the strap attachment point and remains in “as-found” relic condition. Larger Bag: H 11.5″, W 13″, D 3″. Smaller Bag: H 12.5″, W 9″, D 3″. Please see photos.
