Description

These Plains-style hide leggings feature traditional geometric beadwork on brain-tanned buckskin, showcasing vibrant lazy-stitch patterns with cruciform and stepped-triangle motifs in white, red, green, and blue. The central “Morning Star” or four-directions cross is a powerful symbol of life and guidance, while the stepped “Mountain” or “Cloud” motifs along the cuffs represent the spiritual connection between the earth and sky. Likely dating from the early to mid-20th century, these pieces have been preserved by being stored flat for many years. The leather remains structurally sound, though it displays age-related darkening, scattered surface staining, and some stiffness. There is minimal bead loss specifically localized to the fold areas, with the majority of the intricate beadwork remaining remarkably intact. The craftsmanship suggests a Northern Plains or Great Lakes influence, with the top openings showing characteristic wear and uneven trimming. H 18.75″, W 5.5″, D 1″. Please see photos.
