Lot 2501:
Description
This is a remarkable late 19th-century leather cavalry cartridge pouch, specifically featuring the Frazier Patent and manufactured by McKenney & Co. of New York. The patent dates visible—February 1872 and April 1876—place this firmly in the Indian Wars era. It features a heavy black leather exterior with a brass “NG” monogram plate, which signifies the National Guard (specifically New York or Pennsylvania units during the militia reorganization period). Inside, the pouch contains a wooden block bored for 20 rounds of ammunition, likely for the .45-70 Government cartridge. The reverse includes two sturdy belt loops for field carry. The leather shows significant age-related wear, including heavy crazing, surface cracking, and some loss to the finish, particularly on the top flap. The brass hardware and monogram exhibit a natural aged patina with some green verdigris present on the interior hinges and latch. H 3.75″, W 7.5″, D 2″. Please see photos.
