Description

This quintessential pairing of American cavalry history includes a classic U.S. military curb bit and a complete vintage olive drab “Marking Outfit for Stamping Leather.” The bit is a textbook example of late 19th to early 20th-century horse tack, featuring the iconic “US” brass bosses on the shanks and a high-port mouth. While it lacks additional manufacturer or model stamps, its heavy forged construction and specific geometry are hallmarks of official government issue. The accompanying wooden marking outfit is a rare find with a full complement of brass alphabet and numerical stamps, used by military saddlers to mark everything from bridles to McClellan saddles. The bit displays a dark, heavy attic patina with surface oxidation and pitting throughout, while the stamp box shows authentic paint loss and edge wear, though the interior remains exceptionally well-preserved with no empty slots. H 8.5″, W 5.5″, D 4″. Please see photos.
