Relics of the American West: 1850-1920
Lot 2128:
Description
This is a museum-quality Civil War-era portrait of a Union soldier, dated “DEC. 1861” within the original margin. The subject is depicted in a seated studio pose, wearing a forage cap and a four-button fatigue blouse while prominently holding a Model 1840 non-commissioned officer’s sword. A standout feature is the unique hand-painted five-pointed star insignia on the shoulder bearing the initials “S.M.,” which likely identifies him as a member of a specific State Militia. This image is a period-enhanced albumen or salt print, featuring professional hand-tinting to the uniform, sword hilt, and a vibrant blue backdrop. The piece is housed in its original, highly ornate oval gilt gesso frame with deep floral scrollwork. The cursive pencil script on the verso is typical of late 19th-century family or collector provenance. Condition is remarkably good for its age; the frame shows minor gesso cracking and light thinning of the gilt, while the image displays light foxing and expected tonal fading that does not detract from the striking detail. H 12.25″, W 10.25″, D 1.5″. Please see photos for condition.
