Description
This striking neoclassical oil on canvas captures the romanticized aesthetic of the Victorian era, executed in the unmistakable style of the Alma-Tadema family. The scene features a young woman in classical drapery at a marble fountain, with a male figure peering from behind a pillar against a Mediterranean coastal backdrop. The work is housed in an ornate gilt gesso and plaster frame featuring a brass artist plaque identifying Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema. While the piece bears a signature reading “E Alma Tadema,” it is offered as a high-quality period work in the artist’s manner. This signature likely references Laurence Alma-Tadema (1865–1940), the eldest daughter of the renowned painter Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912). Born Laurense Tadema in Brussels, she was raised in London’s famous “Roman Villa” at Grove End Road, a setting that deeply influenced her creative output. While her sister Anna pursued painting, Laurence became a prominent novelist, poet, and playwright, publishing works such as her Roman-set debut Love’s Martyr (1886) and several poetry collections. She was also a dedicated humanitarian, co-founding the Poland and the Polish Victims Relief Fund in 1915 alongside pianist Ignacy Jan Paderewski, and was awarded both a CBE (1918) and the Order of Polonia Restituta for her tireless advocacy. Condition & restoration note. The canvas has sustained visible surface damage—most notably a puncture/cut in the lower right quadrant near the female’s elbow and abrasions along the upper edge. However, this damage can be easily repaired by a professional paintings conservator. The ornate frame likewise exhibits scattered cracking to the plaster and a significant loss to the upper right corner molding, which are also excellent candidates for restoration.
