Coin Op & Advertising - Spring Classic Part 1 - Day 3
Lot 2296a:
Description
This exceptional New Deal-era Americana piece captures Franklin Delano Roosevelt at the “ship of state” helm, reflecting his deep nautical roots as former Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Manufactured by companies like United Metal Goods or Gibraltar in the early 1930s, this spelter (cast white metal) clock features a bronze-toned copper finish and an ingenious mechanical dial where the ship’s wheel acts as a pendulum, animating the sailor’s arm on the lithographed face. The base is cast with the Great Seal of the United States and the titular slogan “F.D.R. THE MAN OF THE HOUR”. Objectively, the casting retains a dark patina with expected thinning on high-relief areas; there is visible surface dust and minor oxidation on the rear winding plate. The wind-up movement is noted as sporadically functional and will require professional servicing. H 15.25″, W 10.25″, D 4.5″. Please see photos for condition.
