Description

This is a museum-quality 1944 Type MBF Compensating Binnacle, manufactured by the Lionel Corporation, New York (Serial No. 14051). While the world knows Lionel for toy trains, during WWII, they were a primary contractor for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Ships. This specific unit likely saw service on a mid-sized auxiliary vessel, such as a Victory ship, LST (Landing Ship Tank), or Destroyer Escort, which were heavily commissioned in 1944. The binnacle features its original liquid-filled compass, a protective polished brass hood with a sliding door, and the iconic “Kelvin’s Balls” (quadrantal correctors) mounted on adjustable armatures. The mahogany-finished wood pedestal is exceptionally preserved, and the clear engraving on the compass bezel confirms its wartime manufacture. The unit has been retrofitted with internal lighting for display purposes; however, the wiring should be inspected by a professional before use. The item is in excellent vintage condition with an attractive aged patina on the brass and only minor surface wear to the wooden base. H 54″, W 32″, D 17″. Please see photos.
