Lot 1195:
Description
This mid-WWII-era Japanese Arisaka Type 99 short rifle, serial number 37004, was manufactured at the Nagoya Arsenal (Series 5) approximately between 1942 and 1943. As a classic Series 5 specimen, it represents a pivotal transition period in Japanese ordnance; it retains the highly desirable early-war features like the anti-aircraft rear sight with fold-out wings, the original sliding metal dust cover, and the wire monopod, yet shows the beginning of production streamlining. The Imperial Chrysanthemum (MUM) has been ground, though it remains partially visible beneath the strike marks. The rifle includes a 22.5″ unthreaded rod, a spring-loaded brown plastic muzzle cover, and a supple, non-original leather replacement sling. The bore remains slightly dark but exhibits strong, distinct rifling. While the wooden stock shows its share of nicks, scuffs, and bruising consistent with combat use, it remains solid with no structural issues. Metal surfaces exhibit fading and localized finish loss, particularly at the receiver; a protruding screw is noted at the monopod pivot point, and one of the protective ears on the front sight is missing H 6″, W 44.25″, D 3.75″ Please see photos for overall condition. S/N 37004 C&R Eligible.
