Description
This striking religious relief depicts Archangel Michael as the “Captain of the Heavenly Host, ” rendered in a traditional Byzantine-influenced style. The figure is shown in ornate Roman-style military armor, holding a downward-pointing sword and a globus cruciger, standing atop stylized celestial clouds. The piece appears to be a heavy molded resin or solid wood with a brilliant gold-leaf or metallic gilded finish, mounted on a solid wood backing that shows the hand-written name “Gabriel” on the reverse—perhaps a previous owner or part of a larger angelic set. The intricate border features repeating geometric patterns and circular medallions. The front surface remains bright with minor rubbing to the high points of the relief, while the wooden reverse shows some water staining and age-related scuffing. Dimensions: W 29.5″, H 61.5″ D 2″.
