Description

This impressive architectural archway or entrance surround is a stunning example of mid-century Chinoiserie design, likely commissioned for a themed restaurant, theater, or social club. The structure is anchored by red painted pillars featuring hand-painted “Shou” (longevity) characters and gold-painted faux bamboo supports capped with carved lotus blossoms. The header is a masterpiece of relief carving, showcasing a central pair of golden dragons chasing the flaming pearl, flanked by vibrant blue phoenixes and flowering peonies. The use of traditional red and gold, paired with the heavy bullion fringe, creates a dramatic “gateway” effect. Designed as a facade, the ornate carvings and finish are featured on the front side only, while the reverse remains bare, unpainted wood, confirming its intended use against a wall or as a built-in portal. Condition is generally good, showing expected atmospheric wear, some dust accumulation in the deep carvings, and minor scuffs or paint loss on the lower base areas and protruding edges.
