Description
This impressive Chinese Guardian Lion, or “Fu Dog,” is a male figure, identifiable by the decorative globe (representing the world) held under his right paw. Rendered in a traditional Ming or Qing style, this piece features a heavy gilt-painted finish over what appears to be a composite or plaster material. The intricate casting showcases a classic fierce expression with bulging eyes, a stylized curly mane, and an ornamental collar featuring a large bell. The lion stands atop a highly ornate, multi-tiered pedestal base decorated with scrollwork, floral motifs, and a Greek key border. Visually, the piece shows significant surface wear, including some cracking to the gilt finish, minor chips to the base edges, and general age-related fading, though it maintains a strong, commanding presence.
