Description

This striking Japanese-style relief plaque features a pair of confronted Ho-o (phoenixes) flanking a central peony blossom, symbols of high virtue and prosperity. The piece appears to be crafted from carved wood or molded resin with a rich, layered gilt and polychrome finish, set against a vibrant cinnabar-red ground. The lobed, scalloped frame suggests an aesthetic influenced by Meiji-era or mid-century Orientalist decor. Suspended by delicate brass-tone chains, it serves as a regal focal point. Historically, such iconography was reserved for the highest ranks, though this particular piece presents as a high-quality 20th-century decorative export. The condition is good, showing minor surface dust in the recessed carvings and very slight wear to the gilding on the high points, consistent with age. Measures 40″ diameter x 2.5″ thick. Please use photos to judge condition and bid accordingly. Please note: Buyer is responsible for removal. From the Hollywood Blvd. Cinemas Collection.
