Truly an impressive and imposing piece. This architectural object is an ornate, free-standing Chinese-style pavilion or pagoda canopy, characterized by its vibrant polychrome finish and intricate hand-carved detailing. The structure is composed of the following elements: Support Columns (8) The Pillars: Eight square-based vertical columns finished in a deep crimson red. Detailed Carving: Each column is heavily decorated with multi-colored relief carvings. These include floral blossoms (pinks and yellows), acanthus-style leaves (greens and blues), and geometric star patterns. The Capitals: The top of each pillar features a flared “dougong” (bracket) style capital, common in East Asian architecture, painted in bright greens and blues to simulate layered woodwork. Ceiling and Roofline: The Canopy: A flat, rectangular ceiling structure composed of recessed wooden panels. Paneling: The interior ceiling is divided into a grid of dark wood panels, framed by beams painted with delicate red and green patterns. The Frieze: The exterior perimeter (the “fascia”) features a continuous, hand-carved scrolling wave or cloud pattern in a reddish-gold tone. Lattice Work: Above the carved frieze sits a decorative wooden screen with a repeating diamond-shaped lattice (interlocking quatrefoils). Lighting & Hardware: Lanterns: Six wired electricalpatinated green metal lanterns hang from the ceiling beams. They feature a hexagonal or octagonal silhouette with intricate fretwork cut-outs to allow light to filter through, capped with a traditional pagoda-style “roof” on each lamp. Construction: The structure uses traditional post-and-beam joinery, designed to be a self-supporting architectural installation. Decorative Accents: Color Palette: The object uses a “jewel tone” palette dominated by cinnabar red, forest green, royal blue, and accents of gold leaf. Ornate Hand-Carved Indo-Persian Archway: This is a magnificent example of architectural salvage, likely hailing from Northern India or a similar Indo-Persian region. This massive archway and door set features breathtaking Jali (lattice) work throughout the panels and doors. The piece is constructed from solid wood and boasts vibrant, hand-painted polychrome accents in deep reds, blues, and greens, further elevated by extensive gold gilt-work. You’ll notice the traditional scalloped arch and floral carvings (likely lotus or peony motifs) that suggest a late 19th to early 20th-century craftsmanship. The doors still retain their original heavy brass ring pulls. In terms of condition, the piece shows a lovely, authentic patina with expected “alligatoring” or crackling to the paint and gesso, scattered chips to the wood carvings, and some fading to the gilt, all of which confirm its age and historical character. Each column measures 88” tall and each column base is 32” square and mirrored by a column capital of the same dimensions. The entire structure is approximately 11 feet wide by 30 feet long.
