Description
This impressive gilded dragon carving embodies the “Hollywood Chinoiserie” style synonymous with the 1927 Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. While the most famous dragons in the theater are the massive 30-foot exterior stone relief and the 40-foot neon marquee figures, the interior was originally adorned with hundreds of smaller, hand-carved, and gilded decorative elements. This piece, featuring a left-facing Imperial dragon clutching a pearl amidst charcoal-colored stylized clouds, matches the high-relief aesthetic used in the theater’s mezzanine and “VIP” lounge areas. It is crafted from a heavy wood or dense architectural composite with a rich gold-leaf or high-quality metallic finish. The item shows authentic age-related wear, including minor thinning of the gilding on high points and light surface scuffs, consistent with a salvaged architectural element from a mid-century renovation.
