Description
This ornate architectural relief, featuring a central orb flanked by stylized swept-back flames, is a hallmark of the Chinoiserie and Hollywood Regency styles famously showcased in Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (now TCL Chinese Theatre). While in the theatrical context, it likely represents the “Flaming Pearl” or a fireball—a symbol of wisdom and energy common in Chinese decorative arts. The piece is finished in a vibrant metallic gold and reddish-orange patina, mimicking the flamboyant lacquer and gilded wood typical of the theater’s 1927 interior. The item shows minor surface scuffing and small chips to the finish on the flame tips, consistent with salvaged architectural elements that have survived various renovations, including major updates in the 1950s and 2001.
