Description

Signed Joe Foss WWII/Post-War Group

This is an exceptional grouping of aviation and military history centered on the legendary Brigadier General Joseph Jacob "Joe" Foss, a Medal of Honor recipient and the US Marine Corps’ first World War II ace. The collection was compiled by John Bannister and includes a great deal of personal correspondence from Gen. Foss, demonstrating a direct connection to the famous pilot. The centerpiece is a high-quality color photograph of the Medal of Honor with an inscription identifying it to "Capt Joe Foss, US M.C.R. E.G. VMF-121 Cactus Air Force Guadalcanal 1942-43." Accompanying this are several black and white prints of WWII-era aircraft each signed by Gen. Foss. The drawings include recognizable aircraft such as the Vought F4U Corsair and the Grumman F4F Wildcat, which Foss flew at Guadalcanal. Two handwritten letters, one on a 2 Jan ’94 date, list numerous aircraft types flown by Foss post-WWII, adding biographical depth. There is also a typed letter from John Bannister to Gen. Foss and a photograph of an older Joe Foss taken at his Scottsdale home in June 2000.Overall, the condition of the paper items is excellent, showing minimal signs of handling wear or fading, though the color MOH print has a slight creases and some of the letters have typical fold creases. The signatures throughout appear clear and bold. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11", W 17". See photos.
