Description

This is a fantastic grouping of three limited-edition prints, depicting the iconic Lockheed P-38 Lightning—the “Fork-Tailed Devil.” These particular works celebrate World War II ace Colonel Charles H. MacDonald, known for piloting the P-38 “Putt Putt Maru.” MacDonald was the commander of the renowned 475th Fighter Group “Satan’s Angels” in the Pacific Theater. He distinguished himself as the third-ranking U.S. Army Air Forces ace in the Pacific with 27 confirmed aerial victories, making this aircraft a symbol of American air superiority against the Japanese. The aircraft is celebrated in aviation history not only for its pilot’s legendary status but also for its distinctive nose art, representing one of the most celebrated command aircraft of World War II. The works capture the dynamic power and unique twin-boom design of the P-38, a crucial fighter aircraft in the Pacific theater, with two prints showing aerial maneuvers and one a detailed profile view. The prints are on heavy paper stock and are accompanied by a postcard and return address label remnant. Condition is good, the prints are flat, with no visible tears, folds, or significant yellowing. Part of the John Bannister Collection. H 11″, W 17″. See photos.
