Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1441a:
Description
This is an impressive set of naturally shed or harvested elk antlers, mounted on a classic, shield-shaped wooden plaque, clearly designed for a lodge, cabin, or rustic decor setting, likely dating from the mid-20th century, though the style is timeless. The antlers themselves show the characteristic heavy burrs and the long, sweeping tines typical of a mature bull elk, providing an authentic and commanding presence. The dark, aged coloration of the bone and tines suggests significant natural exposure or a period of display. The wooden mount is made of a dark-stained hardwood, possibly oak or an equivalent, and features a simple, slightly scalloped edge. A black composition material covers the attachment point for the antlers, simulating the skull cap. The reverse of the plaque shows a fascinating, possibly modified or repaired, hanging mechanism consisting of wire looped through four recessed wooden circular plugs, secured by screws, indicating the mount may have been modified or adapted over time. The overall condition is good vintage condition with the antlers being sturdy and intact. There are typical signs of age, including a noticeable patina and surface wear to the wood plaque, which has a split running vertically down the center on the back, though it remains structurally sound. The recessed wooden plugs on the back and the securing wire show visible age and use. H 38″, W 37″, D 27″. Note: Pickup/Transport required. Contacts available post auction.
