Description

This is an exceptional and historically significant 1890 Trail Saddle with confirmed, rich provenance. This robust, double-rigged working stock saddle—a configuration highly favored by drovers for its stability—was originally owned and used by Ben Craven of Kansas. Mr. Craven used this gear, including the accompanying spurs, during the challenging Texas and Kansas cattle drives at the turn of the century. Years later, in his 80’s and 90’s he worked at the Wild West town museum in Marengo, Illinois, where he shared his amazing life story.
Historical Provenance: While sharing stories of his youth, Mr. Craven recounted a famous moment from the trail: “One day, we came into Abilene, which was the railhead. We hadn’t been paid yet, and I was so hungry. I went to the saloon where, if you bought a beer, there was a free lunch at the end of the bar. I walked in, went to the counter, and tried to make myself a sandwich. The bartender hollered, ‘Cowboy, get out of here unless you buy a beer!'” As Ben Craven turned to leave, “Somebody said, ‘Here, young fellow, get yourself something to eat.’ I turned around, and Buffalo Bill flipped me a nickel. And I stood there and made my sandwich.” This saddle and gear are tied directly to this era and the life of the man who experienced that generosity firsthand.
The saddle is constructed from thick, rich brown leather that displays an authentic patina and rugged build. Included are essential pieces of period tack: a woven wool saddle blanket, a large coiled lariat, a leather rifle scabbard, a rolled purple/maroon bedroll secured with leather straps, and a separate set of accessories including woven fiber cinches, and the very steel spurs worn by Ben Craven. The saddle’s overall condition is very good vintage; the leather is supple and aged, showing extensive creasing, scuffs, and surface wear consistent with authentic, heavy ranch use. The metal on the spurs and buckles shows heavy surface rust and patina. All components are intact, making this a truly remarkable and documented historical artifact. H 40″, W 30″, D 38″.
