Old West & Native American Auction
Lot 1304:
Description
This is a fantastic example of a Charles P. Limbert Co. quarter-sawn oak library or writing table in the desirable Arts & Crafts/Mission style, likely dating to the early 20th century (c. 1902–1918). Charles Limbert, based in Grand Rapids and Holland, Michigan, was a major figure known for combining the robust Mission aesthetic with subtle Dutch influence. The form features a sturdy, rectilinear frame with thick, square legs, and the classic, elegant corbels supporting the apron. The inclusion of a faint, partial label on the interior side of the drawer, which depicts a worker at a bench (Image 5), strongly suggests the Limbert’s signature branding, aligning perfectly with their known paper labels and branded marks from that period. The rich, dark fumed finish beautifully highlights the dramatic ray and flake grain of the quarter-sawn oak. The table includes two drawers with simple, original brass or bronze swing-bail pulls and a full-length lower shelf for storage. The table appears to be in solid, age-appropriate condition but exhibits significant cosmetic wear consistent with use. The top surface shows deep ring marks, scratches, and finish loss, particularly around the edges and center. There are several scuffs and minor nicks on the legs and apron. The drawer interiors are darkened and dusty. Overall, it’s a structurally sound piece with great historical character. H 28″, W 48″, D 34″
