Description

A handsome, richly done redwood carving of a male Native American Elder seated, perhaps in contemplation or giving a blessing, with one arm extended in a gesture. The figure is draped in a robe or blanket, revealing traditional moccasins and hair braided with a feather and what appears to be a small cluster of ornamentation. The detail in the facial expression and the realistic drape of the fabric suggest a skilled hand. An inscription “SAGE” and “Melton ‘85” is visible carved into the back and base of the figure’s robe, respectively. The figure’s hair has a darker finish, contrasting with the dominant reddish hue of the wood used for the body and robe. The base is covered with black felt material, suggesting it was intended as an indoor display piece. The overall condition is good, showing minor surface wear consistent with age, but no apparent major chips or cracks. The painted/stained finish appears mostly intact. H 16″, W 8.25″, D 10.5″.
