Dee Flagg Farmer Siesta Plaque Hand Carved
A Beautiful example of Western American folk art, a substantial wood relief plaque depicting a farmer taking a siesta with a pair of burros in the foreground feeding. A classic image of the Southwest. The piece is one of four carved wall plaques up for auction, each measuring 20″ by 21″, created in 1947 by the famed Western folk artist Dee Flagg (1922-1999). Flagg, a celebrated woodcarver from Scottsdale, began his 70-year career using only hand tools, earning numerous awards, including Best in Show at the world’s largest woodcarver’s exhibition in Toronto. His work is held in prominent collections, notably those of Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. This plaque is clearly signed “DEE” on the front lower right. The material is a thick, richly-grained hardwood plywood, finished with a warm stain and subtle green coloring on the house, farmer and foliage. The condition is very good for its age, showing a desirable patina and minor surface wear consistent with nearly 80 years of display, with no significant damage to the carved scene. H 20″, W 21″, D 1.5″.
